Getting the Perfect Glow
It’s no secret that the perfect summer glow is a look we are all after. Gorgeous, sun-tanned skin goes hand in hand with shaping a beautiful summer bod. Whether that’s for boating and pool parties, outdoor adventures, or just because you enjoy looking good, there are some important things you should know about tanning.
There are a lot of rumors around tanning salons and UV tanning booth, and while it is true that there is a wrong way to go about using these tans, if you understand and use safe tanning principles, there is nothing to worry about. In fact, a national survey conducted in the United States showed that nearly 14 million people went tanning at a day spa at least once within the last year.
Safe Tanning Tips
Just because 14 million people went tanning though, doesn’t mean they all did it safely. Here are some safe tanning tips to help you get the perfect glow this summer.
Do Your Research: Not all tanning beds are equal. When it comes to safe tanning, a little bit of research is necessary. First, understand your skin type and what your specific needs and goals are. If you have very sensitive skin, be sure to start off tanning slowly and realize that the first couple of times might be a bit uncomfortable. Be sure to understand the risks of using a tanning bed (especially for prolonged periods of time), and make sure you are using them in the safest way possible.
Shower and Exfoliate Pre-Tan: Because UV rays go through your skin and stimulate your body to produce melanin (which is what makes your skin darker), keeping your skin fresh and exfoliated will help prime you for an even tan. This is one of the most overlooked parts of getting a great summer tan.
Be Aware of Your Personal Health Situation: Everyone has different needs when it comes to health. If you have a sensitivity to being exposed to UV light, that is ok. It is important though to be aware of it. Some people might feel faint or dizzy after lying in a tanning bed for too long. Additionally, some people have type I skin, which just burns and doesn’t tan. If you have type I skin, it is a good idea to skip the tanning bed as it puts you at risk for burns. If you aren’t certain about your skin type, consult a doctor.
Stay Properly Hydrated: Many people don’t realize that hydration is important for safe tanning practices. As the UV rays of the tanning bed heat up your body, as a natural response you will start to sweat. Having water on hand is important for staying hydrated.
Protective Covers and Protection: Not all areas of your body need to be tanned, and some will respond poorly to tanning beds. Eye covers are a must have for safe tanning as they will prevent the UV radiation from hitting your iris. Additionally, lip protection is often used to prevent chapped or cracked lips, and some private and sensitive areas of your body that don’t get a lot of sunlight can usually be covered for all or most of the tanning session.
Less is More:
When it comes to tanning, less is more. Tan for the minimum amount of time possible to get a reaction. Staying in a tanning bed for too long will simply burn your skin, and possible cause peeling. Just get what you need and then leave. There is no reason to try to “over tan.” The process of building up a tan is gradual and cannot be forced (unless you are looking for a spray tan).
Use a Moisturizer: When tanning, it is important to use a moisturizer to keep your skin soft and hydrated. UV rays from the sun and tanning beds are going to dry out your skin. Make sure you take care of your skin properly by applying a lotion or moisturizer to keep it youthful and glowing. There is no sense in having a great tan if your skin is chapped and cracked!
One of the most important tips to remember is to choose a reputable spa (Or tanning salon) that it has good reviews. Reviews can be found on a variety of websites, such as Google.
